| Air museums feature rare vintage aircraft By CARY ORDWAY
People who like airplanes can find a lot to like when they visit Southern California, where they’ll find plenty of opportunity to see historic aircraft up-close and personal. In some cases, they’ll see a lot more than just aircraft but if you have someone in your family who is fascinated by the world of flight, here are some great places to visit.
San Diego Air and Space Museum
The San Diego Zoo gets all the press but in the same general area – Balboa Park – this museum excels at displaying an excellent variety of flying machines that run the gamut from the earliest days of flight to the Space Shuttle. Throw in a 4-D theater, flight simulators and fascinating special exhibits and the San Diego Air and Space Museum is definitely worth a visit when you’re in the area.
Currently the museum’s headline exhibit is one about Aliens, a special part of the museum that has temporary exhibits set up to take you through a complete examination of why there are likely to be alien life forms existing on other planets and how and why that might be possible based on our own scientific knowledge. The exhibit takes you through the usual stories about unidentified flying objects and how the media has helped create certain images that we have in our minds about what aliens might look like. Then it takes you into the reality of life here on earth and how unusual creatures have adapted to hostile environments – miles below the ocean surface, for example.
The conclusion: It seems quite likely that there may be other living creatures, maybe as small as bacteria, that have adapted to the harsh environments that we know exist on many planets in our own universe. Another part of the exhibit helps put in perspective just how big our |

With his Bavarian heritage, Chef Greg Lutes of the Groveland Hotel is a master at German food -- which comes in handy during Oktoberfest. He has added some German specialties to the menu, including a special Choucroute sausage made with saurkraut and pork. If you're headed to Yosemite, you can celebrate Oktoberfest all of September through Sunday, October 3rd at the Groveland. There will be plenty of sausage, beer, pretzels, other traditional German food and barrels of fun...As dusk sets in this fall in Big Bear Lake certain animals’ nocturnal instincts take over at the Moonridge Animal Park, which provides an engaging exhibition for people to learn about these creatures of the night. Flashlight Safari tours start Saturday, October 2 and continue every Saturday through October 30. Some of the animals that come alive after dark include mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, raccoons, skunks, beaver, black bear, owls, coyotes and wolves...In Santa Barbara, fall is all about food and drink, with some cuisine-centric culture thrown in for good measure. It starts with winery open houses and the “main dish” lasts throughout October, with the 100 food events planned...
